We’re about as far from Christmas as it’s possible to be.
And yet, the Christmas message of hope in darkness still speaks to the rest of the year. So as the year turns, and we’re closer to Christmas 2024 than Christmas 2025 again, I hope you enjoy this meditation from Matthew chapter 3, on the war of Christmas.
Because Christmas is a military gambit in the ongoing war between the serpent and the seed of the woman, God’s long promised champion.
It sings well to Kingsfold.
A star descended from the sky A sign from God most high “My son is born, his kingdom nigh, In darkness shines his light” As wise men worship, Herod plots, God’s own they knew him not While foreign lords their tribute brought And bowed before their Lord. Then into Egypt went God’s Son The holy promised one Exiled beneath a foreign sun: The son of God’s right hand. Hear Rachel’s weeping, full of woe, Her children are no more The serpent’s son has struck his blow Against the rightful throne. Yet when the dragon’s war was waged And Herod spent his rage The child returned, our grief assuaged, Good news to all enslaved: God’s champion returns to fight And set his world to right To cast the dragon into night And claim his holy bride.
Amen.
